Why torsion springs break on Cleveland's coldest mornings

Cold does not break a spring by itself. Cycles do. But steel gets less forgiving as it contracts, and the grease on the shaft thickens overnight. So a spring already near the end lets go on the first lift of the day. Unheated detached garages make it worse. Damp air off the lake sits in those buildings all winter. Rust forms between the coils. Rusted coils grind against each other and shorten the life of the set.

The repair starts with the door, not the spring. Wire diameter, inside diameter, wound length and wind direction all have to match. Weight matters more than door size. A 1980s 16x7 insulated steel sectional is heavier than it looks, and many were built with one spring where two would balance better. Prewar one-piece tilt-ups are a different animal, with side springs and jamb hardware.

Do not keep pressing the opener. A broken spring leaves the full door weight on a motor never designed to lift it. That bends top sections and strips gears.

Check the cables while you are looking. Road salt and slush pool at the bottom bracket and corrode the strands there. New springs on frayed cables is wasted work. If the bottom section is rusted through, or a wood bottom rail has rotted from snow contact, we will say so before touching the springs.
