What to do when the door won't move and the car is stuck inside

Most emergency calls start the same way. A bang in the garage, then nothing. Look at the spring above the door. A clean gap in the coil means a broken torsion spring. That happens most on the coldest mornings here, when steel contracts and the oil on the coils thickens. Stop pressing the wall button. The opener will strain, then reverse or grind the gear.

Do not pull the red release cord yet with a broken spring. The door has no counterweight now. On a 16x7 insulated steel sectional that is a lot of dead weight coming down. If you must get a car out, have a second person and lift from the bottom section corners.

Other true emergencies look different. A door off the track after ice jammed it at close on a flat-slab driveway. Frayed lift cables on a detached garage where salt and slush have been pooling at the bottom section. Old one-piece tilt-up doors on prewar garages with side extension springs and no containment cable.

Some things can wait until morning. A dead remote. A blinking safety eye knocked out of alignment by a bumper. Chalked paint on a west-facing door. Rust bubbling low on the bottom section is a repair, not a rescue.
