What makes one garage door repair cost more than another?
The part that failed is the first thing. A torsion spring on a wide attached two-car door carries far more weight than a single spring on an 8x7 detached garage behind a prewar colonial, so the hardware differs and so does the labor. Age matters too: on 1900–1930 wood-frame houses in Cleveland we often find a rear-lot garage where the track was shimmed to a settled slab, and that has to be corrected before new rollers will run true. Road salt and 60–100+ freeze-thaw cycles a season eat bottom brackets and hinges, so a spring job sometimes turns up two or three corroded parts that should go at the same time. How long does the repair usually take once you're on site?
Most calls wrap up in about an hour to two hours. Spring replacement, cable re-spooling, roller swaps and opener gear kits all fall in that window. Detached garages behind doubles on the east side can run longer because the framing is old wood and the header sometimes needs new backing before we mount hardware. Full door section replacement is the outlier, since panels for Clopay and Amarr doors may have to be ordered.

Can somebody come out today?

A spring just let go on my door. Can I still run it until you arrive?
No. Leave the door where it sits and keep people and cars out from under it. That spring was holding the entire weight of the door, and without it the panel can drop fast enough to break bones or crush a hood. Do not pull the emergency release and try to lift it by hand either, because the door will then carry its full weight. Park outside, use the side door, and let us handle it with the right winding bars.

Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. Parts carry the manufacturer warranty and our labor is warranted as well. If something we installed fails inside that period, we come back and make it right at no charge to you. We also tell you up front which grade of spring or roller we're putting on, because the cheap options do not hold up to Cleveland winters and we would rather not return for the same door twice.

My door won't open at all. What should I check first?
Look at the springs above the door. A clean gap in the coil means the spring broke, and at that point you stop and call. If the springs look intact, check that the opener has power and that nothing is blocking the photo eyes near the floor, since salt spray and slush knock them out of alignment every winter. Also confirm the lock bar on older detached garages isn't thrown. If none of that explains it, do not force the door with the opener, because you can bend track and turn a small repair into a bigger one.

Is my trouble coming from the motor unit or from the door hardware?
There's a simple test. With the door closed, pull the red release cord and lift the door by hand. If it glides up and stays put around waist height, the door is balanced and your issue is the opener: gears, board, capacitor or safety sensors. If it feels brutally heavy, drags in the track, or slams back down, the problem is springs, cables or rollers and the opener is just the thing that gave out trying to move it. Humid Cleveland summers and salted winters wear those two systems differently, so know which one you're dealing with before anyone quotes you a part.
