Why does the door start down, then roll back up?

That is the safety reversing sensors talking. Two photo eyes sit near the floor on each track, wired low-voltage back to the opener. Federal rules under UL 325 have required them on openers built since 1993. They must mount low, within six inches of the floor. That low position is exactly the problem in Cleveland. Slush, road salt and shovel blades all live down there.

Read the lights first. One eye is the sender, one the receiver. A steady light on both usually means alignment is fine. A dark or flickering receiver means blocked, bumped, or a broken wire. Sun matters too. Late afternoon glare on a west-facing unshaded door can wash out the receiver and cause a false reverse.

Half the sensor calls we see are not the sensor. Bottom weatherstrip cracked by freeze-thaw freezes to the slab. The door hits ice, the opener senses resistance, and it reverses. Same symptom, different fix.

In older detached garages the wire run is the usual culprit. Staples pinch the insulation, damp air corrodes the splice, and the circuit drops out intermittently. We chase the run rather than swap parts blindly. If brackets are rusted through, replacing them beats bending them straight again.
